Long Beach Local Market Update

Long Beach, California, boasts a rich and dynamic history, evolving from Native American settlements to a thriving port city. The area was originally inhabited by the Tongva people, with significant settlements along the coast and inland. Spanish explorers, noting the smoke signals from native communities, referred to the area as the "Bay of the Smokes." In the late 18th century, the land became part of vast Spanish land grants, eventually leading to the establishment of Rancho Los Cerritos and Rancho Los Alamitos. The city itself began to take shape in the 1880s as "Willmore City," later incorporating as Long Beach in 1888. The discovery of oil in 1921, particularly in Signal Hill, spurred rapid growth and development, establishing Long Beach as a popular seaside resort and a significant port city. Despite a devastating earthquake in 1933, which led to stricter building codes, Long Beach continued to grow, especially after World War II. Today, evidence of its past remains in its 18 historic districts and numerous landmarks.

Long Beach is characterized by a vibrant and diverse cultural landscape. The city is a melting pot of various ethnic and racial groups, with significant Latino, Black, and Asian Pacific Islander populations, including a notable Cambodian community—one of the largest outside of Southeast Asia. This diversity is celebrated through numerous cultural festivals, art museums like the Long Beach Museum of Art and the Museum of Latin American Art, and institutions dedicated to specific heritages, such as the Cambodian Cultural Heritage Museum. The city also fosters a strong arts scene, with the East Village Arts District showcasing galleries and studios, and various performing arts venues hosting the Long Beach Symphony Orchestra and Long Beach Opera. Beyond its historical and artistic offerings, Long Beach provides a convenient location relative to Los Angeles. Situated just 22 miles south of downtown Los Angeles, it offers multiple transportation options. Travelers can take a tram; a journey to Los Angeles takes approximately one hour and costs around $2. Buses are also available, with some routes taking about 40 minutes. For those driving, the direct route is about 23.6 miles and takes around 27 minutes in normal traffic, though this can vary significantly depending on congestion.
